I completely agree that hackathons are so much better when you don't have to code overnight. After a certain point your brain starts feeling like mud and it's hard to focus. 2 day hackathons are generally more fun!

Funny, this could be my story :)
More than 10 years ago I met this wonderful man who couldn't stop talking in a language I couldn't understand: blabla ... Linux ... blabla ... CPU ... So I attended a course where I learned 2 years sys administration - what I mostly forgot over the years. Now, married and on the search for a change in my carrier, I started coding and I'm hooked too. I started with HTML and CSS, tried PHP/mySQL (and got there a little bit frustrated), found codecademie, codescool and teamtreehouse, and got quite good with Javascript and got basics in jQuery, Ruby and Rails. With my husband on my side - always supporting and helping, when I have problems - I managed to code small games, like dice poker or black jack. It's really fun and I hope it will work out for me soon.
Thanks for sharing your story. It's nice to know, that I'm not alone.

I disagree. I think guys and girls are equally good at design.

Guys have an edge because we're more confident and vocal about it.

not bad. I was just looking for a lightweight tool.
Shortage of women is quite true, but actually we need more and better front-end designers nowadays so app devs don't have to do everything themselves. Girls fit the design gap much better than most boys on average.

I just finished level 1. It was so much fun! The syntax of level 1 is similar to LATEX. I’m loving it so far.
